Q: I wasn't involved with the College Dems last semester. Can I still apply for a leadership position?
Absolutely. There is no experience required to join the College Dems leadership. In fact, many of our most dedicated board members weren't involved with the Dems in their first semester at Georgetown. We love to see new members get involved, and we highly encourage you to apply regardless of your previous experience.
Q: What positions are available?
In January, we appoint every position on the Appointed Board,
as well as a limited number of Deputy Board Members and Dorm Captains and positions
on the Events and General Communications Staffs. Please see the
Positions page for a full list of positions and their corresponding responsibilities.
Q: What's the process of applying for a position?
Q: What's the difference between Appointed Board and the Dorm Captains, Events Staff, and Communications Staff?
The two major differences are the required time commitment
and level of responsibility. Appointed Board and Deputy Board positions
are in charge of a specific aspect of the organization. For example, the
Speakers Director is responsible for bringing speakers to campus and the
Campus Outreach Director is responsible for coordinating our projects with
other Georgetown groups. Both positions have major responsibilities within
the organization, and each requires a substantial time commitment.
Dorm Captains and members of the Events Project Team and General Communications
Staffs have a great deal of responsibility (see Position
Descriptions for more details) and are an invaluable part of the organization.
However, they require a less significant amount of time each week than
the Appointed and Deputy Boards. These positions are ideal for members
with less free time who still want to be heavily involved with the College
Dems, or as a first step within the leadership of the organization. Most
current board members of the College Dems began as Dorm Captains or members
of the Communications Staff.
Q: Are Appointed Board positions competitive?
Yes. We normally receive applications from many highly-qualified individuals, especially in the case of high-profile positions. At the end of the day, we're looking for a different set of qualities for each position, and the person with the "best resume" is not necessarily the best person for every position.
Q: I'm going to be studying abroad during part of the 2007 term. Can I still apply for a leadership or Appointed Board position?
If you will be abroad during the Fall 2008 semester, you
can apply for the leadership. If you will be abroad during the Spring
2008 semester, you
cannot apply for the leadership at this time,
but we highly encourage you to apply when you return in the fall.
One exception: the position of Campaign Coordinator must be on
campus during the Fall 2008 semester.
Q: I'm currently a member of the Events Staff, Communications Staff, or a dorm captain. Do I need to reapply for my position?
Short answer: only if you want a different position. If
you were appointed in Fall 2007 and would like to keep your current leadership
position, please e-mail your department director:
Julie Alcarez (Events),
Chris Dodge (Communications), or
Caitie Boland (Membership).
Q: I'm currently a member of the Appointed Board. Do I need to reapply for my position?
Yes. Because the structure of the board has changed somewhat
and 2008 is a new term, we are reappointing all positions on the Appointed
Board.
Q: Can I apply for an Appointed Board position and still keep my current position?
If you do not receive a position on the Appointed Board,
you can most certainly keep your current position. In most cases, you may
also receive a position on the Appointed Board and remain in your position
as a Dorm Captain or member of a staff. The Executive Board will deal with
these situations as they come up, on a case-by-case basis.
Q: If I want to keep my current position, can I apply for an Appointed Board position in the fall?
Members of the Appointed Board will serve out their term until
December 2008. Having said that, there are usually vacancies in the fall
when some people go to study abroad, and we expect to have some Appointed
Board positions open at various times during the year and during the Fall
2008 application process. You can also apply for a different leadership
position in Fall 2008 and then an appointed position in Spring 2009.
Q: Does the order in which I rank my top positions matter?
Yes. We’ll normally ask you questions about your top
two or three positions. If you’re strongly attached to a particular
position, please note that on your application and we’ll focus questions
there. Similarly, if you’re ambivalent about your top few choices,
please note that as well and we’ll distribute questions more equally.
Q: What kind of questions can I expect during interviews?
While questions will differ for each position, we
strongly recommend that you give some thought to these three questions:
-
What are some specific projects or events that you'd like to lead with your top position?
-
In a potentially competitive field, what makes you uniquely qualified for your top few positions?
-
What is one suggestion you have to improve the College Democrats as an organization?
Q: I can't find my question on this page. What should I do?
E-mail your question directly to the board at
GUDemsEboard@gmail.com. All questions will normally be answered within 24 hours.
